Today is the Annexation of Guanacaste Day. It's the anniversary of the day that the province of Guanacaste became a part of Costa Rica by their own free will. Their slogan is "De la patria por nuestra voluntad" which means "Of the country by our own choice". This is a big deal and represents Costa Rican democracy and what not, so we didn't have class today.
So....we took a trip to Heredia, Alajuela to go to the Cafe Britt coffee plantation. It turned out to be quite the adventure.
My roommates and I met five other girls at San Pedro mall this morning because some of them were wanting to get their noses pierced (YOLO). Afterward, we tried to take two taxis to downtown San Jose to find the bus that would take us to Heredia, but we ended up in some unknown part of town wandering around asking locals where we could find the bus. Many locals led us astray and one man even tried to lead us there (he was a bit crazy and we managed to shake him). Finally, by pure happenstance, we found the big red and white bus that had "Heredia" written across the top. About 30 minutes later, we had arrived in Heredia and taken a taxi to Cafe Britt. We were even a tad early for our tour. Success.
The tour was a lot of fun, and I managed to get a bunch of little bags of coffee for friends back home. Afterward (this was about 3 or 4 o'clock) we were finally able to eat lunch. We walked to a cute, cheap little soda not far from Cafe Britt, then took a bus to downtown Heredia in order to find a bus that would take us back to San Jose.
Maybe it was just because of the holiday, but Heredia seemed a lot calmer and cleaner than San Jose. I liked it a lot, and might even want to go back before I leave. I enjoyed it there.
All in all, I took 3 taxis and 4 buses today. I also only spent a little more than $20, and made it back home in time to eat dinner, talk to family and friends, blog, and do my paper and project due tomorrow.
Good day.
One day of class left this week, then Volcano Irazu, Cartago, and Manuel-Antonio on Friday!
